DEBRIS from Boscombe’s failed surf reef was washed ashore near Honeycombe Beach following last week’s stormy weather.

Sand, stones and plastic from one of the reef’s giant sandbags was removed from the beach by council clean-up crews on Friday morning, after rough seas damaged the controversial structure overnight.

Honeycombe Beach resident Christopher Nurko said: “There were a lot of rocks and debris out on the beach on Friday morning, they were out pretty early clearing it up, I saw them when I went for a jog.

“It was scattered down the beach towards Hengistbury Head.”

Mark Smith, service director for tourism at Bournemouth council, said the debris came from a bag damaged by a boat’s propeller last year, which is due to be removed when the reef is made safe.

“Last week’s weather brought the first big storms of the season, with exceptionally rough seas, resulting in part of one of the reef bags being deposited on the beach at Boscombe,” he said.
