- Grades are down for the first time since GCSEs were introduced
- The main issue looks set to be with English, as changes to grade boundaries push many expected to get a C down to a D
- Schools which fail to get 40 per cent of their students above the "floor standard" of 5 A-C grades, including English and Maths, face closure or conversion to academies run by third-party sponsors instead of the LA
- Some schools are already pledging to take action over unexpectedly low English results
