HUNDREDS of cyclists will be flooding Dorset’s roads this Sunday as the 23rd Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride takes to the highways.

Motorists are urged to watch out for two wheelers, as they leave Corfe Mullen recreation ground between 8am and 11am and head towards Wimborne, returning throughout the day via Lytchett Matravers.

Drivers are asked to be particularly vigilant as cyclists cross the main roads and Red Post near Bere Regis, and the A350 at Lytchett Matravers and Spetisbury.

Given the honour of starting the ride this year is last year’s top fund raiser, Kieran Thorne from Ferndown, who raised a magnificent £2,700.

Ride organiser Peter Smith-Nicholls said: “This year’s ride is all about going the extra mile to raise money in Macmillan’s centenary year, so it seemed appropriate to ask Kieran to get the ride underway as he raised over £2,700 last year.”

Having performed the ceremony, Kieran will get back in the saddle and join more than 100 riders taking on the 100-mile challenge.

The Daily Echo backed cycle Sunday has a route to suit everyone with a choice of six circuits through Dorset villages.

There is a 10-mile ride for the young and not so young along cycle paths, country lanes and local roads.

The 20-mile ride will take pedal-pushers beside the River Stour and through to Charborough Park.

The longer rides of 38, 48 and 60 miles follow the Stour Valley to Blandford and then visit some of the county’s picturesque villages.

And the challenging 100 mile ride takes cyclists further into the heart of Dorset.

There are still places left for this year’s event, visit macmillanbikeride.co.uk to find out how to enter on the day.

People are welcome to visit the Corfe Mullen recreation ground in Badbury View Road anytime during the day to find out more about Macmillan and support the cyclists.
