A CHIP shop manager started crying and claimed he did not deliberately throw hot oil over a customer.

Yuksel Hacipasaoglu was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm over the incident at The Chippy, in Bournemouth town centre.

He gave evidence yesterday when the shop appealed against the licensing sub-committee’s interim decision to ban him from the premises.

He said the customers threw ketchup, signs and a sausage around, and also threw a piece of rubble that just missed his head.

He admitted he lost his temper and went to the front door with the hot oil.

“I was just trying to defend myself,” he said. “I was looking outside and somebody in the corner punched my face and I dropped the oil.”

Mr Hacipasaoglu, who had a black eye, said: “I was not trying to use the oil. I was trying to scare them. They were three huge guys.”

A statement from Sgt Derek McKerl said Mr Hacipasaoglu inflicted “serious injuries”.

He told councillors the CCTV footage – which was not played – showed Mr Hacipasaoglu “pour” the oil over the customer after he was punched.

The customer only threw the rubble after he was injured by the oil, said Sgt McKerl.

Police were called to the incident at 1.46am on Saturday.

Four people were arrested – a 29-year-old from Kent for affray, a 29-year-old from Erith for affray, a 28-year-old from Oxford for provocation of violence and a 45-year-old from Bournemouth for GBH.

The committee decided to partially lift the ban and allow Mr Hacipas- aoglu to pass through the shop because he lived in a flat upstairs. He still cannot serve customers.

The shop, in Old Christchurch Road, was again allowed to sell food between 11pm and 4am, as long as it has registered door staff on a Friday and Saturday night.
