THE police and students are pitted against each other over accommodation during the Olympics.

Dorset Police asked about using a high quality student block in Poole for security staff during the sailing competition at Weymouth.

They enquired about using the 308-room Corfe House near the quay, but Bournemouth University students voted 44-8 against the idea during their annual meeting.

Students argue the plan would mean putting more undergraduates into Corfe House because they have shorter lets and would move out by the summer, allowing the police to move in.

Corfe House resident Nikki Mahon, who seconded the motion, said the undergraduates at the block feel “out of it” and not part of the university, and that taxis home are expensive.

The majority of BU’s new undergraduates are clustered together near the heart of Bournemouth town centre on The Lansdowne.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “We are still negotiating with a number of providers to ensure requirements are met and value for money is achieved.

“We therefore cannot comment on individual cases.”

A Bournemouth University spokesman said the idea was only a proposal and that its decision would be based on the principle that students should not be disadvantaged.
