TAKE a walk through Poole and it’s hard to ignore the discarded cigarette packets and fast food wrappers littering the streets.

But exactly which brand of litter are you most likely to see?

A survey by Keep Britain Tidy survey names Marlboro smokers and customers of the takeaway sandwich chain Subway as the worst offenders.

Marlboro cigarette packets made up 13 per cent of litter counted by Keep Britain Tidy volunteers in Poole, while Subway wrappers represented 12 per cent.

Poole was among 30 UK towns and cities targeted in the survey, released to coincide with Keep Britain Tidy’s new Love Where You Live campaign, which is launched today by TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp.

A spokesman for Subway, which has an outlet in the town centre and two other shops in Poole, said: “As responsible retailers, Subway franchisees work closely with their local communities and have policies in place to ensure waste is disposed of efficiently and recycled where possible.

“Store staff are trained in refuse management and regular street patrols are carried out around all stores to collect waste.”

Packets of Marlboro cigarettes all carry logos urging smokers to dispose of their empty packets responsibly.

Borough of Poole spends £2 million on street cleaning every year.

Council contracts and performance manager Ian Poultney said: “We have over 1,000 public bins in the borough, including 300 award-winning dual bins, giving residents and visitors plenty of opportunity to both dispose of their litter and bagged dog waste responsibly and recycle.

“We urge people to please use these and other facilities, such as cigarette bins, to help keep Poole tidy.”
