WELL, they haven’t found anyone who is against them yet, so what is the hold-up with introducing the pioneering speed cameras along Springdale Road in Broadstone?

The Home Office has yet to approve the state-of-the-art ‘average speed’ cameras, set up close to the school to nab speeders.

Back in October, we revealed that a six-week study had already shown almost 100 cars a day were heading down that particular road at excessive speed, so it was clear that some of these drivers need teaching a lesson.

The trouble was, none of the culprits were going to be taught a lesson by being fined and docked points from their licence during the trial period.

It’s clearly been a great success – the figures show an impressive drop in speeders outside the school – but surely the Home Office needs to get its act together and give the thumbs-up to a system that quite clearly is having a major impact on driving habits?

I’m all for these ‘average’ speed cameras.

However perfect we drivers think we are, many of us with an acute knowledge of our local fixed cameras will adapt our driving speed and style based on that knowledge.

Springdale Road is a fairly straight and lengthy stretch of road that has been a worthy testing ground for the equipment.

There will have been a fair few drivers thankful this test won’t result in prosecution – but let’s look forward to the day when it does…
