SUPPORT has come for the contentious new marina proposed for Poole Harbour from a local body keen to maintain the maritime heritage.

The 60-strong Poole unit of the Maritime Volunteer Service says it considers Poole Harbour Commissioners’ plans for a 950-berth marine centre “very exciting”.

Nigel Barrow, deputy head of MVS Poole, said: “If Poole as a town and port is to continue to earn a substantial part of its living from the sea then it needs to change to accommodate different times and needs.”

He said: “The proposal does address particular concerns that we have had for some time; we are a voluntary, low cost maritime training and skills provider.

“We have noticed the gradual reduction of space available for the commercial maritime sector in favour of residential accommodation and private marinas.

“Consequently this has had a negative impact on jobs and the retention of marine related skills locally.”

Proposals for the £20-25million Poole Marine Centre, jutting out in front of Hamworthy Park, would include a new home for Poole Yacht Club, a cruise ship berth, workshops, small business park and education centre.

“We are especially keen on seeing some form of educational and heritage site within the marine centre and also applaud room being given for commercial craft and different water based industries and voluntary organisations,” said Mr Barrow.

He said they had concerns about increased water and land traffic, loss of harbour edge, change of use to parts of the harbour and the effect on marine life and the environment but had confidence in the commissioners’ intent to carry out assessments and consult.

“On balance, as a group, we fully support the proposed marine centre and look forward to seeing it become a reality in the not too distant future,” he said.
