Did you know there's a new cycling facility that's nearly complete at Slades Farm? It's pretty difficult to miss as there's been plenty of news coverage.

There are those who think that the facility is a bad thing and, as always, there is a "nimby" element who only object to it because of where it is.

Personally, I am really looking forward to the opening that is scheduled for May and I must going and visit before the opening so that I can see what the final stages of construction look like before I get the chance to ride it.

Those people behind the new track have campaigned for many years and have faced lots of objections along the route, so they must be congratulated that this is now so close to completion.

I think the new facility is going to be very good and could potentially be an excellent boost for cycling both locally and nationally.

There is a website up and running that explains how the track will be run and when people can either ride or go to see events - bournemouthcyclingcentre.org - it's worth a visit if you want to know more.

Whilst there has been a loss of green space caused by the construction of the track and its surrounding infrastructure, from what I could see this was not a space that was utilised by anyone other than people taking their dogs out to relieve themselves.

I know that some people disagree with me on this point, but I am much happier to see this excellent sporting facility in place than an area that could not be fully enjoyed due to the risk of stepping in something unpleasant!

I do have two main concerns surrounding the track; the first is around the maintenance and prevention of vandalism. It's a shame that this even crosses my mind, but seeing the level of mindless vandalism that takes place generally I wonder how long it will it will be before the new cycle track falls victim.

My second concern, which bothers me the most, is about the accessibility of the track to the general public. How often will I be able to turn up and ride?

I can go to our local BMX track at Iford and ride whenever I want, as long as there isn't an event on, but it sounds like it's going to be very different at the Slades Farm track.

I understand the safety and liability issues, but I think that in order for this to avoid becoming a very expensive white elephant it needs to be well used.

On a different note to finish off this week, it's getting warmer, the days are getting longer and the clocks are due to change at the end of the month.

Assuming that you haven't been riding throughout the winter, it's time to dust off the bike, pump up the tyres and get out on your bike.

Alternatively, if you have been riding all winter like me, then this is a good time to get your bike serviced and replace any worn out bits ready for the summer!
