TEMPERS flared at a public meeting on the future of Portland Coastguard station.

More than 150 people turned out to show their support for the coastguard station at the meeting in Portland on Tuesday night.

The meeting, which was often punctuated by heckles and calls from the audience, was part of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency's consultation process on the future of the service.

Under plans put forward by the MCA, Portland Coastguard station on Weymouth harbour could be closed after the Olympic sailing events in a revamping of the coastguard system.

Two super centres would be created in the north and south of the UK at Aberdeen and either Southampton or Portsmouth. Smaller satellite stations would operate during the day time around the UK.

During the meeting representatives from the MCA outlined the newplans, but said that “nothing was set in stone” and would have to be decided by Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport Mike Penning MP after the consultationperiod finished on March 24.
