FOUR kittens are lucky to be alive after they were found in a box next to some rubbish.

The animals, estimated to be between five and six weeks old, were found near dustbins behind a block of flats in Wimborne Road, Bournemouth, last Sunday after a member of the public heard noises and went to investigate.

The kittens could have easily ended up being emptied into the bin lorry with the rubbish, said Julie Burden, manager of the Bournemouth RSPCA clinic, which has been caring for them.

The three girls and a boy have been nicknamed “Dominoes” by staff due to their distinct black and white markings, she said.

She appealed to people to think more carefully before buying cute animals on a whim.

Last Monday two six-week-old kittens, named Kat and Alfie by staff, were handed in over the counter.

Other animals have been handed in just weeks after being bought because the owners have decided to move house or discovered they are allergic to the animal, she said.

“What if the dustbin men didn’t see the kittens?” she asked. “They could have been minced up.

“People are not thinking before they are buying animals. They have got to consider whether it is going to fit in with their lifestyle and whether they have health problems.”

People should also neuter their pets, she added.

Anyone with information about the kittens is asked to leave a message for Inspector Jo Story via the RSPCA cruelty and information line on 0300 1234 999.
