One of the largest areas of precious heathland in south-east Dorset is to be protected by a 10-year management plan.

The internationally important, wild and beautiful Canford Heath reserve at Poole, is home to many exceptional species of birds and wildlife.

Covering 1,038 acres, most of which is a SSSI, it is a site for the rare Dartford warbler and nightjar and all six British reptiles.

Borough of Poole has launched a plan to protect and maintain the heath and its unique wildlife, which has gone out for public consultation.

“We are extremely fortunate to have such a special area in Poole.

“It is our responsibility to ensure it is looked after properly and remains for future generations to enjoy,” said Cllr Peter Adams, cabinet portfolio holder for leisure.

“The heathland in Canford Heath is a well-loved and well-used area, and this plan seeks to protect and enhance those special qualities and sensitive wildlife.”

The plan sets out the statutory protection required for habitats, wildlife and archaeological features of Canford Heath, as well as the actions required to restore the condition of the protected site.

Too much shrub and tree cover along with damaging arson attacks, which take years for the habitat to recover, has spoiled the heathland overall.

Action needed to restore it includes reintroducing extensive grazing across the whole site, continued vegetation management and more work to prevent arson attacks.

The plan also details how important archaeological features, such as Bronze Age round barrows, will be conserved and access provided for the many visitors the site attracts each year.

Canford Heath estate now has a population of around 14,000 and the plan sets out the continuing involvement with the local community and nearby schools, Dorset police, Dorset Fire and Rescue and the Urban Heaths Partnership.

The management plan can be seen on boroughofpoole.com and Canford Heath library and the closing date for comments is October 31. Residents can email comments to leisure@poole.gov.uk or write to Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, Northmead House, 30-32 Northmead Drive, Poole BH17 7RP.
