HISTORY repeated itself for Jimmy Glass – even if his latest goalscoring exploits failed to have quite the same impact.

More than a decade after hitting the headlines across the globe, the former Cherries goalkeeper was up to his old tricks at King’s Park.

His big moment came in May 1999 when he ventured forward to score a memorable last-minute goal to help Carlisle United avoid relegation to the non-league.

Now 37 and running a taxi business in Wimborne, Glass rolled back the years at the weekend and bagged another dramatic goal to save Carlisle’s bacon.

This time, however, it was a late leveller for the London branch of the Carlisle Supporters’ Club in a friendly against a team of fans from AFC Bournemouth.

Glass’s strike, which beat heroic 15-year-old Poole Town youth goalkeeper Sam Wells, denied Cherries victory after they had fought back from 3-0 down to claim a 4-3 lead.

“It was a good finish but I’d missed about 10 before that!” laughed Glass, whose momentous goal for Carlisle in 1999 was selected as the 72nd greatest sporting moment by Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Sporting Moments.

Glass, who lives in Lytchett Matravers and runs Wimborne Minster Cars, added: “Their young goalkeeper was phenomenal and saved almost everything. But nobody stops me from scoring in the end!

“I ran on to a ball over the top and, crash, bang wallop, it was in the back of the net. I didn’t think about it at the time and it was only afterwards that I thought maybe I’m always supposed to save Carlisle at the end!”

Glass, who has also written an autobiography entitled One Hit Wonder, played more than 100 times for Cherries between 1996 and 1998 and is credited with scoring an own goal in their Auto Windscreens Shield defeat by Grimsby at Wembley.
