Just six months after their proposals for Branksome Rec were thrown out by the council, Poole Town have confirmed plans for a new ground at Canford Magna.

After years of ground-hopping, the football club hopes its dreams of a permanent home will finally be realised with the latest scheme.

With the scars of the tumultuous Branksome saga still raw, the non-league club hopes the Canford plans will prove less contentious.

A new floodlit ground would be complimented by three multi-use games areas and a new pavilion.

Dolphins’ vice-chairman Chris Reeves said the club had once again focused on the “substantial community benefits” to Poole. He added: “We feel that, as a club, we can’t be doing much more than we are and we just want to be able to progress.”

The new ground would be built on a site just west of Bearwood, which is currently utilised each Sunday by the Magna Road car boot sale.

The intention is to hollow out the land and sink the ground so as to make it “virtually invisible”.

A new car park would be built and any necessary improvements would be made to the traffic light-controlled junction on Magna Road.

With the excavation and access infrastructure needed, Mr Reeves said the cost of the scheme could hit £2m.

He added that Poole Town remained a “priority” club for both the FA and Football Foundation, meaning funding should be made available.

Should the plans progress smoothly, it is hoped the club could move into their new home during the 2011-12 season. Around 2,000 leaflets have been distributed around the Bearwood area informing residents of the proposals.

A presentation on the scheme will be made at the Hamworthy Club on Magna Road at 7pm on Wednesday.
