THE majority of the nation may be mourning our worst ever World Cup defeat, but one die-hard England fan ended the game cheering on the Germans.

Lee Churchill, a painter and decorator from Poole, is believed to be one of the few punters in England to have backed Germany to win 4-1.

The 35-year-old’s £5 bet, at 80-1, netted him a cool £400.

“Don’t get me wrong, I was still cheering for England at 2-1, and still when we thought it was 2-2,” said the dad-of-one.

“But when Germany went 3-1 up I started to think, ‘Hold on a minute, my bet could come in here’.

“After it went 4-1, I had a nervous last 20 minutes.”

How would he have felt if, by some footballing miracle, England had knocked in four late goals to win?

Lee said: “They would only have gone on and lost to Argentina in the next game anyway.

“I love my country and I love the England team.

“I just wish they could play a little better now and then.”

Lee says he’ll spend some of his winnings on a birthday present for his fiancée.

He added: “After the appalling way we played in the group games and the way Germany started, I just thought I’d bet on us getting a drubbing. So I bet on Germany to win 4-0 and 4-1.”

On his tip for the manager’s job, should Fabio Capello part with England in the coming days, Lee said: “I think you could put a halfwit in charge and still do better than the current England manager has done.

“It wouldn’t be difficult to do a better job than he has done in the past four games would it?”
