Mark Baseby admits Buccaneers aren’t going to roll sides over away from home like they did last year on their way to National League and cup double glory.

But Bournemouth Castle Cover’s captain insists his new-look team will improve on the road following defeats at Buxton and against Dudley at Wolves after notching 10 paid 12 in a 54-39 home romp over Isle of Wight.

The Dorset side’s win over the Islanders on Wednesday was their fourth straight home triumph on Poole’s track and keeps Buccaneers firmly in the title mix.

Baseby, who grabbed his first paid maximum of the season, said: “It would have been great to get a full maximum, but I’ll take 10 paid 12 from four rides.

“That’s because a couple of weeks ago, I was riding as well but not getting the scores.

“It was tough going away from home, especially when last year we were so powerful and blew teams away.

“But Buxton and Dudley are two of the toughest away matches we’ll have to face this year.

“So, hopefully, we can make up for those defeats in our next away match at King’s Lynn in the cup (on June 13).”

Baseby was one of four Bournemouth riders to hit the paid double figure mark in their big win over Isle of Wight.

Daniel Halsey (nine paid 10), Chris Mills (11) and John Resch (eight paid 11) were the others, while Karl Mason grabbed eight paid nine and Kyle Howarth (seven paid eight).

Halsey said: “It was nice to score double figures for the first time in a while.

“I’m starting to get back to my best.

“It was nice to be back at Wimborne Road. The place is much better than Buxton and Wolves, where it was all a bit crazy.”

Talking about his display against the Islanders, Mills said: “Twice the pipe on my carburettor split.

“I got it sorted the first time and then it packed up again.

“In fact, I don’t think I’ve had a meeting where it has all gone to plan yet for Bournemouth,” added Mills, who hurriedly had to take his best engine out of a cracked frame and put it onto his back-up frame at Wolves ahead of the Dudley defeat following the machine examiner’s pre-meeting check.

Mills, who took the chequered flag three times against the Islanders but also suffered one retirement, added: “I’m trying a few different things and I still got 11 points.

“I’m getting used to the Poole track now and trying to find the lines where to pass.

“I tried a few different ones that worked against Isle of Wight.

“I’ll try them in the next home meeting (against Buxton on June 23) but, hopefully, I won’t have to pass and can do it from the start.”

Mason said: “I had a bad first ride but then I got myself together.

“I made a small change to my bike and it worked well again.

“We tried to put the last two away match defeats behind us and just focused on beating Isle of Wight, and we pulled through.”

Number two Aaron Baseby was the only Bournemouth rider to struggle as he got one point from four outings and was excluded for falling once.

He said: “It has been a difficult three meetings for me, but that’s the way it goes.

“I just have to come back next time and try and get a few more points.

“A performance like my one against Isle of Wight doesn’t do anything for your confidence, but it is part and parcel of speedway, and you just have to get through it.”

Buccaneers team manager Garry May, whose side had lost 50-43 at Buxton and 51-41 against Dudley, said: “I’m still confident we can go away and win.

“I think Dudley and Buxton are really strong teams, especially on their own tracks.

“I think they’ll be up there near the top with us, so it was great to beat Isle of Wight and get back to winning ways.”

Bournemouth’s line up for the National League Four-Team Championship at Mildenhall on June 6 is: 1 Mills, 2 Mason, 3 Halsey, 4 Mark Baseby.
