CHILDREN and soldiers have joined forces to fight a battle to save Blandford Leisure Centre.
Pupils from Archbishop Wake School fell in with soldiers from Blandford Camp by swapping uniforms for casual clothes on a day of fundraising.
Youngsters at the Black Lane primary school raised nearly £210 from their dress-down day, while soldiers a mile away at the garrison raised just over £190 from going mufti.
Lt Donna Gavin, from Blandford Camp, joined Alan Frame, acting head teacher at Archbishop Wake, to hand over two cheques to Cllr Steve Hitchings, chairman of the Blandford Leisure Centre Action Group.
“The fact that so many people in the local community are raising funds for the leisure centre shows how much they value it,” said Cllr Hitchings.
Campaigners are fighting to keep the leisure centre open beyond next March when the cash-strapped district council withdraws its annual funding of £250,000.
