Dorset Police and the Daily Echo have joined forces in a bid to keep people safe this Halloween.

We’ve printed a sign for you to put in your window if you don’t want to be bothered by trick-or-treaters.

Extra police patrols will be carried out during the evening of Saturday October 31.

A police spokesman said officers understand people want to dress up and have fun, but are keen to ensure other residents feel safe.

Bournemouth Echo: The "no trick or treaters" sign to put in your window

“For some, especially older people and those on their own, it can be quite a distressing time,” said the spokesman.

“We’re appealing to people who are planning to dress up and visit homes trick or treating to be aware some members of the community are genuinely scared of the costumes, loud noise and games.

“If people don’t want to open their doors or join in, then move on and don’t try to intimidate them in any way.”

He stressed residents have the right to say no to trick or treaters and suggested using a door chain where possible.

Dorset Police can be contacted on 999 if a crime is in progress or life is in danger. In other circumstances, general inquiries can be made on 01202 222222.
