THE post office has landed.

Nearly three months to the day since Wimborne’s postal counter was lost in a fire at the Martin McColl newsagent, a temporary building to house the new post office arrived in King Street.

BT is set to install technical cables to Wimborne Minster’s temporary Post Office cabin today.

But Post Office Counters Ltd say they do not expect the cabin in a King Street car park to be ready for customers until the end of the month, as they are waiting for planning approval.

A spokeswoman said: “We cannot pre-empt the council's considerations and must await its official decision before any further steps can be taken.”

Mike Hirsh, the council’s head of planning and building control, said: “East Dorset District Council is dealing with the planning application as quickly as possible, within the existing national legislative framework.

“However, we have already made it clear to the Post Office that the council will not take action to impede the delivery of the building on site or the start of preliminary works of any kind.”

The application is expected to be approved through delegated powers at the end of this week.
