BOURNEMOUTH Cricket Club chairman Rob Coombs led the tributes after watching the Chapel Gate heroes claim the Cockspur Club Twenty20 Cup.

Coombs was among a vocal Bournemouth crowd which cheered the team to victory in front of the Sky TV cameras at the County Ground in Derby on Monday evening.

He told the Echo: “It was a fantastic day. We never dreamed we’d get this far.

“We came here just hoping to contribute and do as well as we could with a very young side and they played some excellent cricket.”

Craig de Weymarn’s team defeated favourites Reigate Priory in the first semi-final before cruising to victory over Cuckney to get their hands on the silverware.

Coombs, who has been Bournemouth chairman for the past four years, hinted that more success could be ahead for the young Lions.

He added: “They are a solid bunch and they stick together.

“They are a young side and many of them are at university and who knows what happens to them after university and whether they stay in the area or not. We’ll have to wait and see.”
