A SHELL was detonated at Hurst Spit near Milford on Sea around 7.15am on Thursday morning.

Lymington Coastguard Rescue was alerted on Wednesday morning around 7.05am to an object on the tide line, which looked like 12-inch long shell with brass rings around the end.

The coastguard marked the area with a red flag and set up an exclusion zone, while notifying Hampshire Police and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal at Portsmouth, who carried out the controlled detonation this morning.

A coastguard spokesperson said: β€œIt is not unusual to find shells in this area, especially due to the high tide on this particular spot of coast.”
