MARK Baseby reeled off an impressive 13 paid 14 in Bournemouth’s big 64-29 home romp over Isle of Wight last night but then labelled his performance “not good enough.”

Baseby was only beaten once by an Islander, Tom Brown, and was in scintillating form as he picked up most of his points from the back courtesy of sweeping passing moves.

But the Castle Cover Buccaneer said: “It was a good individual performance, but not good enough. I hope to do better.”

Baseby, making his debut on the Poole track which hosts third-tier Bournemouth’s home meetings, added: “ It was a shame I couldn’t get after Tom in that race, but this challenge match was only a warm-up for our National League Knockout Cup tie at Newport on Sunday.

“That’s when it counts, when the real business starts.”

Baseby, whose side completed a formidable 121-63 aggregate two-leg challenge triumph, lines-up in the British Under-21 Final at Lakeside tonight (8pm) after winning his semi at Ryde with 14 points and coming home first in the run-off.

He said: “I finished 13th with three points in the final at Eastbourne in 2007 but last year I got injured in the qualifier at Weymouth and that set me back, so I’m not expecting too much tonight.

“It’s my last year in the juniors but I’m mainly aiming for a Premier League spot this year.

“Anything else is a bonus, although I will still be trying my best at Lakeside.”

Buccaneers’ Kyle Newman also takes to the Arena-Essex Raceway tonight after piling up 10 paid 12 from five rides against the outclassed Islanders last night.

Only a self-inflicted heat two tumble after he’d taken the lead on the second bend deprived the 17-year-old of going through the card unbeaten.

Newman, who went down after trying to dive under Isle of Wight’s Brendan Johnson and was excluded, said: “I think I was trying a bit too hard then because I really wanted to do well.

“I got the hang of it in the end and it turned out pretty good for me.”

Newman was the surprise packet in the semi at Ryde after finishing second behind Baseby.

Looking ahead to his British Under-21 Final debut, Newman added: “I’m extremely pleased I got through.

“I’m just hoping I can get some valuable experience and get a good score, hopefully claim some big scalps, riders like Tai Woffinden.

“Hopefully I can give them a run for their money.

“I’ve got a few more years at this level yet but it’s nice to get to the final early on and get a feel for it.”

Pirates star Joe Screen is expected to be named in the Team Great Britain World Cup squad later today.
