Day Five (Sunday, 6am). It had rained all night. B&B hostess kindly did washing so boys had dry kit to start the day.
Within a few miles they were soaked yet again. We were feeling lucky to be in the car until we discovered a leaky sunroof.
Armed with towels and waterproofs we repacked the car, made a picnic (praying for somewhere dry to eat later).
We passed the lads later cycling into a headwind. The end today being Carlisle Castle 85 miles away. A daunting thought in awful weather. Natasha and I visited Drumlanrig Castle. We met the cyclists in Auldgirth. Lunch in pub nearby.
The scenery today was disguised by low rain clouds and mist. Driving was hazardous.
Adrian got drenched by a large puddle – all he could hear was Paul laughing!
The boys cycled over the border into England at 4.50pm, and head towards Carlisle.Natasha and I drive to Carlisle Castle to meet the key holder for our accommodation. The Army has kindly organised several places for us to stay along the route.
Luckily the rain disappeared and the riders had a good last 1.5 hours into Carlisle.
We all spent a quiet evening reflecting our experiences in Scotland and planning our activities for the next few days. Also a few tears were shed thinking about our loved ones at home and how hard this experience is psychologically.
