A man has been fined more than £1,700 for dumping waste beside recycling banks.

Aakash Rathi, of St Leonards, Ringwood, was prosecuted by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council after being caught fly-tipping at Brighton Hill Recycling Centre on September 23, 2025.

Items dumped included cardboard boxes, a Moses basket and a buggy.

CCTV footage captured the incident, and a cardboard box bearing Mr Rathi’s address led to his identification.

He pleaded guilty at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on October 30 and was ordered to pay a £461 fine, a £184 victim surcharge, and £1,063.24 in compensation and clean-up costs.

Councillor Laura James, the council’s cabinet member for residents’ services and housing, said: "This is a clear reminder that residents must ensure they are using the recycling banks correctly and not just using them as a place to dump their waste irresponsibly, as failing to do so could leave them facing a criminal record.

"Fly-tipping has a huge effect on our communities, and the time and public money spent clearing up fly-tipped waste takes valuable resources away from other vital frontline services, impacting everyone."
