Take a look inside Bournemouth’s new state-of-the-art college campus, which is set to welcome students through its doors tomorrow.

Bournemouth and Poole College is opening its new Compass Building following a £37 million development, more than two years in the making.

The building is equipped with advanced technical facilities, including real-life hair and beauty salons, professional-standard kitchens and a life-sized aeroplane cabin.

The college says the new facilities offer students “a new standard for technical college facilities in our conurbation”.

Phil Sayles, principal of Bournemouth and Poole College, said: “Every aspect of the facility has been designed with the future in mind.

“From specialist teaching spaces and industry-standard facilities to real-world environments.”

Some of the new facilities will also be open to members of the public, including a fully functional hair and beauty salon, and Escoffier, a 66-seat restaurant and bar.

The venue will give hospitality and catering students the chance to hone their skills in a real-world environment.

With separate areas for meat and fish preparation, a pastry kitchen and cutting-edge equipment and fixtures throughout, Escoffier has been designed to replicate the kitchens found in top hotels and restaurants.

The new Horizon Hair and Beauty salons have also been designed and equipped to professional standards.

Like Escoffier, they will be open to members of the public, allowing students to develop their techniques while providing a range of treatments to real clients.

As an added bonus, treatments and meals will be offered at significantly reduced prices, as they will be provided by students.

However, students will have undergone thorough training and assessment to ensure they meet the required standards before working with members of the public.

Prices range from £14 for a blow dry, £21 for a cut and blow-dry to £18 for a semi-permanent colour or £45 for a full head of highlights.  Horizon will also offer lash treatments, facials and massages.

The facilities are confirmed to open to the public, although the exact date has not yet been confirmed. They are expected to welcome their first customers between late October and November.

Another standout feature of the four-storey building is a life-sized aircraft cabin.

The space will give students studying to become flight attendants and related courses the chance to gain practical, hands-on experience in a realistic cabin environment without having to leave the campus.

The college said they work closely with airlines at Bournemouth airport, including Ryanair and TUI.

On the top floor of the building is the college’s 160-seat eating, social and events space, The Observatory, while the ground floor offers a brand-new sports hall, gym and climbing wall. Outside, new lawns and walkways complete the transformation.
