PLANS to shift the Coastguard Rescue Service to an expenses-only volunteer model will no longer go ahead this September.
The change would have meant that coastguard rescue officers (CROs) would no longer receive payment for their time and would only be reimbursed for expenses.
Tom Hayes, MP for Bournemouth East, had raised concerns with ministers, as had trade unions, and CROs.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Hayes said: "I recently met coastguard rescue officers in my office, and they told me how they respond in all conditions and at all hours.
"They drop everything to save lives, and providing that public service often leaves them out of pocket.
"Can I ask the minister to consider all options?"
Maritime minister Keir Mather MP confirmed that plans would not proceed this September.
He said: "Coastguard rescue officers in Bournemouth East carry out an incredible service on behalf of their local community and the country, keeping the public safe.
"We thank them deeply for their service."
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency will now engage further with CROs, unions, and MPs before making any decisions about the service’s future structure.
