AN evening of choral music is set to transport audiences at a Dorset venue back to the grandeur of 16th-century sound.

Armonico Consort, under the direction of Christopher Monks, will perform at Lighthouse Poole on Thursday, October 1, as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations.

The concert features Monteverdi’s Lauda Jerusalem, Beatus Vir, and Ave Maris Stella a 8, alongside Valls’ Missa Scala Aretina a 16, David Buckley’s Lamentations, and a world premiere of Buckley’s latest work.

Christopher Monks said: "My musical journey started with Monteverdi and the Venetian Schools.

"That has inspired so much of what we have gone on to develop at Armonico Consort and has never ceased to inspire me and our musicians."

The programme concludes with Tallis’ iconic 40-part motet Spem In Alium.

Mr Monks explained the choice of repertoire, highlighting the inclusion of Francisco Valls’ polychoral work to showcase the wide-reaching impact of Venetian composers.

He said: "For those who have loved the cinema sound effects of our polychoral performances from Spem in Alium in 40 parts surrounding the audience, to the effervescent drama of the Francesco Scarlatti 16-part works, this is all of that, plus more."

The performance begins at 7pm and is recommended for ages 12 and above.
