Major roadworks in Bournemouth town centre is making “great progress”.

In May, BCP Council started work on Gervis Place as part of their bus service improvement plan which will see the road, bus routes, and pedestrian spaces improved.

A public consultation on the proposed improvements showed that 72 per cent of respondents supported the objectives of the upgrade, which included improved bus journey times and providing two-way bus movements along Old Christchurch Road.

It is understood that the road closure will be in place until February 2027.

It has been reported that the work is being funded by a multi-million grant from the government to transform the area with a new priority route for buses, reconstruction of the uneven road surface, widened footways with raised kerbs for easy access onto the bus, new larger shelters with seating, improved real time information displays and CCTV and new crossing points.

In an update the council has said that by the end of July residents in will be able to see new bus shelters which will have enhanced CCTV and accessibility features.

Cllr Andy Hadley, portfolio holder with responsibilities for highways maintenances, said: “We’re making great progress on the Gervis Place bus service improvement scheme, with major resurfacing work now well underway. Because Bournemouth is built on sand, we’re carrying out a full reconstruction of the road to ensure it can support traffic for years to come. While there has been some short-term disruption, these are once-in-a-generation improvements that will deliver long-term benefits for residents, businesses and visitors.

“The project remains on track for completion, subject to weather conditions, and by the end of July residents will start to see new bus shelters installed, featuring improved accessibility, enhanced CCTV and modern facilities.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their continued patience. Businesses on Gervis Place and Westover Road remain open as usual, anyone travelling by bus can stay up to date with the latest travel information using the Morebus app or speak to one of their dedicated bus advisers, who are available on Westover Road and can be easily identified by their green and blue uniforms.”

The majority of the alternative bus stops are on Westover Road, but more information about specific bus routes is available on the Morebus website
