Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick has “concerns” about the government’s “last-minute” decision to allow pubs to remain open for the England game in the early hours of Monday morning.

On Thursday, prime minister Keir Starmer announced that licences would be extended to allow venues to stay open to show the England last-16 World Cup match versus Mexico, which is kicking off at 1am on Monday 5 July UK time.

Due to forecast storms in Mexico City, FIFA had considered moving the game, but, for now, the original kick off time remains — now the Dorset PCC has pleaded for England fans to “enjoy the event responsibly to keep our communities safe”.

PCC David Sidwick said: "I share the concerns raised by the NPCC about the Government’s last-minute decision to allow pubs to open later.

“While many people will want to enjoy the occasion responsibly, extending licensing hours can place additional pressure on an already stretched night-time economy and may require officers to be diverted from other important policing duties.

“We also know that increased alcohol consumption can contribute to rises in violent crime and domestic abuse.

"I would ask everyone planning to celebrate to think ahead, make arrangements for a safe journey home, and look out for friends and family.

“It is also important to remember that alcohol can remain in your system long after you stop drinking, so you could still be over the limit and unsafe to drive the following morning.

“Please enjoy the event responsibly and help us keep our communities safe."
