One member of staff at Schuh said: “It is sad, but, what can you do?”

The footwear retailer is one of the latest retailers in town centre to close up shop.

In April, Bobbys Beauty Hall closed down for good, and it was announced that the space would be redeveloped to for two new brands.

The ground floor retail space unvacated at this time.

Elsewhere in Commercial Road, charity shop PDSA, closed on June 25 after just two years in the area.

Food traders in the town centre have also fallen victim to permeant closure.

Wenzels, the popular bakery chain, in Christchurch Road suddenly shut its doors less than a year after it opened.

In Bournemouth Square, Franco Manca closed in April, one year after announcing a refurbishment.

When the Echo visited Schuh on Thursday, June 2, at least six empty units were seen in Commercial Road.

For now, shoe shoppers will have to seek alternative shops or travel all the way to Southampton to snag a new pair of trainers from the national retailer.

A spokesperson for Schuh said: “The UK retail sector is undergoing rapid transformation, shaped by shifting consumer behaviours and in response, schuh is evolving to strengthen its position for the future.

“Schuh has made the strategic decision to focus on high-performing locations, resulting in the necessary closure of its Bournemouth store.

“Customers can visit their nearest schuh store in Southampton or Whiteley or explore the full range online."

The Echo understands Costa Coffee will move into the property after Schuh closes down.

Costa currently operates a café out of the neighbouring Primark store in Commercial Road. It is understood that the landlord will use the upstairs of building for residential property.

Primark has been contacted for more information.
