Tesco is opening up its Clubcard scheme to 16 and 17-year-olds for the first time, giving teenagers access to thousands of discounted prices and loyalty rewards previously reserved for adults.

The supermarket giant has announced the launch of a new Clubcard for 16-17s, allowing younger shoppers to unlock Clubcard Prices in stores across the UK and collect points on their spending.

The move means teenagers will be able to take advantage of some of Tesco's biggest discounts, including the retailer's popular meal deal offers, at a time when many families are looking for ways to cut everyday costs.

What is changing for Clubcard rules?

Until now, Tesco Clubcard has generally been aimed at adult shoppers.

But from today, 16 and 17-year-olds can sign up for their own digital Clubcard and access the same in-store discounts enjoyed by millions of Tesco customers.

The new scheme allows teenagers to:

  • Access thousands of Clubcard Prices in Tesco stores
  • Collect Clubcard points on purchases
  • Exchange points for vouchers to spend in Tesco
  • Use their Clubcard at Tesco filling stations

How much could teenagers save?

One of the biggest attractions is access to Tesco's Clubcard Prices promotions, which often offer significant discounts on food, drinks and household essentials.

Teenagers will also be able to get the supermarket's popular lunchtime meal deal at the Clubcard price of £3.85.

With many 16 and 17-year-olds now earning their own money through part-time jobs, apprenticeships and weekend work, the move could help stretch budgets further.

There's one important catch

Teenagers cannot simply sign up on their own.

Instead, they must be invited through the Clubcard account of a parent or guardian.

Parents can send an invitation through the Tesco app or website, allowing their child to create their own Clubcard account.

The Clubcard for 16-17s is digital-only, meaning there is no plastic card available.

Why Tesco is making the change

Tesco says it wants to give younger shoppers access to the benefits of its loyalty scheme as more teenagers become regular customers.

Shama Wilson, Tesco's Group Membership and Loyalty Director, said: "We are delighted to be giving younger customers access to Tesco Clubcard for the first time.

"We have no doubt that it will prove popular with 16 and 17-year-olds, whether they are shopping in one of our big Tesco or little Tesco stores."

She added that members will be able to access Clubcard Prices and collect points that can be converted into vouchers for money off future shopping.

One of Britain's biggest loyalty schemes

Tesco Clubcard remains the UK's most popular supermarket loyalty programme more than three decades after it launched.

The retailer says more than 24 million UK households now have a Clubcard, with the loyalty card used in over 80% of Tesco transactions. Thousands of Clubcard Price discounts are available every week across Tesco stores.

The latest expansion means teenagers can now benefit from the same savings as adult shoppers - potentially helping families reduce grocery bills during the expensive summer holiday period.
