A roadside operation has been launched by Dorset Police to tackle drink driving.

The targeted campaign is aimed at catching motorists who may drive under the influence after arriving in the county by plane or ferry, particularly those who may have been drinking during their journey and intend to drive onwards.

Officers are carrying out roadside checks, breathalysing motorists, and speaking with arriving passengers to ensure they are not over the legal drink or drug drive limit.

Inspector Lee Turner, of the Roads Policing Team, said: "We know that enjoying a drink while on a plane or ferry can be part of the holiday experience, but some people can get carried away and forget they still need to drive home.

"We are launching this operation to make sure that everyone can get home safely.

"Driving while under the influence of alcohol, coupled with fatigue from travelling, can have a significant effect on a person’s ability to drive and react to hazards.

"The message is very clear—if you are planning on drinking while on a plane or ferry, make sure you are not the designated driver home.

"Drink driving is one of the fatal five and can have serious or tragic consequences."

The operation began at the Port of Poole on the evening of Tuesday, April 7.

During the first evening, officers stopped and engaged with the passengers in 97 vehicles as they entered Poole and thankfully, nobody was found to be over the drink drive limit.

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: "There is never an excuse for getting behind the wheel while intoxicated with alcohol or illegal drugs.

"You are not only putting yourself at risk but the lives of others as well.

"This operation sends a very clear message that we will not tolerate drink or drug driving in Dorset under any circumstances.

"I want to thank all the officers involved for their tireless work in keeping Dorset’s roads safe from dangerous and reckless drivers."

Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) have given their backing to the campaign.

Captain Brian Murphy, chief executive of PHC, said: "Poole Harbour Commissioners fully support this proactive operation by Dorset Police.

"The safety of everyone travelling through or working at the Port of Poole is priority, and we are committed to working closely with Dorset Police to promote responsible behaviour.

"We strongly advise all passengers arriving by ferry to plan their onward journey carefully and ensure they do not get behind the wheel if they have consumed alcohol."
