BOURNEMOUTH School has appointed its first female headteacher in its 125-year history.
Dr Dorian Lewis, Bournemouth School’s headteacher, will be stepping down this year and will be succeeded by deputy headteacher Katie Ateaque.
The grammar school, which was founded in 1901 and now based in East Way, serves for boys as well as girls in its sixth form.
It states the school’s purpose is to achieve outstanding outcomes for all through exemplary teaching and learning.
Mike Jones, Chair of Trustees at Bournemouth School, said: “The Board of Trustees is pleased to appoint Katie Ateaque as the next headteacher of Bournemouth School.
“She has a proven track record of exceptional leadership and has a clear vision for the future.
“We are confident she will lead the school with ambition, integrity and great care for its community.”
Dr Lewis will be stepping down after 17 years in post as Bournemouth School’s eighth headteacher.
He said: “It has been a privilege to lead Bournemouth School over the past 17 years. I have worked with Katie for a number of years and am confident that the school will move forward under her leadership.”
A spokesperson for the school said the new appointment marks an important milestone as Mrs Ateaque will become the first female headteacher in Bournemouth School’s 125-year history.
They said the Trustees’ decision reflects their strong confidence in Mrs Ateaque’s leadership, her deep understanding of the school, and her commitment to building on its many strengths and successes.
Mrs Ateaque said: “It is a tremendous honour to be appointed the ninth Headteacher of Bournemouth School.
“We have talented students, dedicated staff and a hard-earned reputation for excellence.
“I am excited to lead the whole School community into its next chapter.”
Bournemouth School is celebrating its 125 years in 2026 and was recently graded outstanding in all areas in its most recent Ofsted inspection.
The grammar school was also recognised as among the best in the south west of England for 2026.
In the regional south west of England breakdown, Parkstone Grammar School and Bournemouth School were named in the top 10 state secondary schools for the region.
