MP is calling to give council powers to restrict junk food advertising near schools and other places where young people spend considerable periods of time.

Mid Dorset & North Poole MP Vikki Slade is working to table a new clause in the devolution bill giving councils the power to regulate advertising on privately-owned billboards.

This would have allowed councils to ban fast-food advertising near schools, youth clubs, parks, and other locations frequented by children and young people.

Although the clause gained cross-party support, it was not selected for a vote.

Mrs Slade said: “I was proud to work with Jamie Oliver's team and the Obesity Health Alliance to put forward a simple but effective measure to protect young people from targeted junk food advertising.

“It’s disappointing that this clause, which would have had clear benefits for children’s health, wasn’t selected for a vote. However, I’m grateful for the cross-party support it received.

“I will continue to fight to curb junk-food advertising aimed at young people.”

Mrs Slade confirmed she is now in discussions for the proposal to be taken forward in the House of Lords for further consideration.

Mrs Slade is also launching a local poll to gauge public opinion in Mid Dorset & North Poole on whether councils should have the power to restrict junk food advertising around schools.
