A MISLEADING sign has caused confusion among Christchurch residents, leading many to believe that crabbing had been banned at Mudeford Quay.
Concerned residents took to social media to voice worries about the potential impact on tourism.
However, BCP Council has clarified that crabbing is not banned at Mudeford Quay, but only restricted in a small, ‘unsafe’ section.
Cllr Richard Herrett, BCP Council’s Cabinet Member for Destination, Leisure and Commercial Operations said: “We recognise that crabbing and fishing are very popular activities at Mudeford Quay, and they have not been banned.
“The sign refers to there being no access to the lower sea wall for safety reasons. This area is already behind a gate and clearly marked as not for public access.
“We acknowledge that this element of the main sign is unclear and will be updating it as soon as possible.”
The council have ordered a reworded panel with a directional arrow to make it clear that crabbing is prohibited on the lower sea defence wall and not Mudeford Quay as a whole.
