A SANDBANKS restaurant that closed last winter owed £351,000 to creditors, liquidators have found.
Lazyjacks in Panorama Road on the peninsula closed down in November 2023 but has since reopened under different ownership.
Its last owners said the Caribbean-themed restaurant closed due to the “difficulties of the current economic climate”.
Liquidator Marcus Daniel Tout of Hampshire-based insolvency practitioner Approved Recovery was summoned to wind down Lazyjacks Ltd in late March.
Recently submitted documents to Companies House show £351,197 was owed to 29 creditors when the liquidators were called.
A total of £105k of this is owed to the landlord Sandbanks Yacht Company, a club, gym and boatyard formed in 1957 and the grounds in which the restaurant is based.
In addition, the documents show that £57k is owed to Octopus Energy as well as a combined £64k to HMRC.
Among the Dorset-based businesses owed money are Bournemouth food supplier Country Fare – owed £7.7k – seafood wholesaler Hutchings, of Bournemouth, which is owed £1.7k, and Jurassic Coast Farm Shop in Winfrith, owed £1.6k.
As well as this, Gemma Martin and Nicholas Young, the two registered directors of the company, are owed a combined £25.7k and Ringwood-based pest controller Rokill is owed £84.
The liquidators have listed 23 employees who are all owed a combined £8.3k.
Mr Tout has put in his report that the total assets available to unsecured credits is more than £48k.
Less than a month before the former owners of Lazyjacks closed the restaurant, they said it would be opening only at the weekends throughout the winter months.
Described as a ‘hidden gem’ of the peninsula, Lazyjacks was loved for its Caribbean themed venue, cocktails and pizza.
It reopened as Lazy Jacks at the end of March with its new owner Merle Crampton and his business partner with a full refurbishment and rebranding.
A lazy jack is a type of rigging which is used on boats to raise the main sail.
The new Lazy Jacks has been described as 'a stylish and relaxed bar and restaurant on Sandbanks Peninsula with waterside views. Specialising in hand-stretched sourdough Neapolitan pizza, daily seafood specials’.
Merle said: "Being based on the grounds of Sandbanks Yacht Club, we thought it was a great name with which to continue to trade."
