A POOLE-based rowing team is preparing to take part in a race dubbed ‘the London Marathon for rowing boats’.
The seven-person mixed team from Poole Gig Rowing Club has signed up for the Great River Race in London on September 21.
The race spans 21.6 miles through the heart of London, from Millwall in the east to Richmond Common in the west.
Rowing in a traditional Cornish Pilot Gig, the team will carry a passenger, along with the cox and a flag, to compete with around 300 other crews.
The Poole rowers will also be fundraising for Help for Heroes - a charity which supported their passenger Gary.
A spokesperson for the team said: “Gary has been significantly supported by Help for Heroes in his recovery and rehabilitation.
“Help for Heroes is a vital charity that provides crucial support to veterans, helping them lead independent lives with dignity and confidence.
"In gratitude for the assistance Gary has received, we aim to raise funds to support this incredible organisation, ensuring they can continue their essential work for other veterans in need.
“Donations, no matter how small, will be a tremendous source of motivation for us and will make a significant difference."
