PORTLAND United's match at Fareham Town tonight (7.45pm) has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Portland still have seven Velocity Wessex League Premier Division matches to play, while Fareham must squeeze in 13 matches before April 22, their last scheduled match.

In one stretch, the Creeksiders are due to play three matches in three days.

Poor weather has prompted some non-League voices to call for an extension to the season, although any decision would need to be approved by the FA.

Before the postponement, Kyle Critchell's Blues were in seventh, with sixth-placed Baffins in pole position for fifth thanks to a handful of games in hand on the Blues and incumbents Brockenhurst.

Prior to the postponement, the islanders’ boss Critchell said: “From now until the end of the season it’s about putting pressure on teams.

“At the same time, can we continue to progress and beat our record from last season?

“I feel that gives us freedom. In terms of Fareham, they’ve really turned a corner and beaten some good sides at home, Cowes and Shaftesbury.

“They’re a young side and have a similar model to ours, so it should be an exciting game.

“Both sides have a bit of freedom behind them and will hope to prevail and get three points.”

On potentially reaching the play-offs, Critchell added: “For us, there’s still something on it but a loss now does impact any belief we have to go on a really extraordinary run until the end of the season to finish in fifth.”

Matt Harvey was due to be Portland’s sole absentee due to family reasons.

The Blues are next in action on Saturday at Sherborne Town (3pm).
