AN EMPTY town centre Argos site is set to be rejuvenated as a brand-new ‘projection mapped’ mini golf experience.

Listed on Trip Advisor as the top fun activity to do in Dudley, arcade-style mini golf business Putt Above looks set to move into a unit at Post Office Road in Bournemouth town centre.

Last occupied by an Argos, the empty unit will soon house a 'unique mini golf experience' where all games are played on the same ‘hole’ with technology adapting the experience for players.

Visuals for each game are projected onto the lanes, with players going head-to-head in a variety of arcade-style mini-games – with an added 1920s-themed twist.

Games include a quiz-based challenge where players must putt the ball into a hole showing the correct answer.

It will be just the second Putt Above site to open in the UK, with the company director stating it will be “the second of its type in the world”.

Steve Goddard said: “With 'lane service' and digital scoring there will be no need to carry around a pencil, or a manual scorecard - and refreshments, snacks and cocktails can be ordered straight to the lane, allowing players to enjoy the fun at hand.

“The vacant Argos unit is located in a prime spot in the town centre. Putt Above will revitalize the vacant space and offer a fun and exciting leisure activity for both residents and tourists.”

The old Argos closed in August 2020 amid a cull of more than 60 stores nationwide and the unit has remained empty ever since.

Putt Above’s parent company, Bournemouth-based Laser Tag Leisure Ltd, has applied to BCP Council for a premises licence to take over the unit.

The business is seeking permission to play recorded music from 10am to midnight and for the supply of refreshments and alcohol. Residents have until June 13 to make representations on the proposal.

As well as the mini golf, Putt Above in Dudley features interactive darts.

Subject to licensing approval, it is expected to open in Bournemouth later this year.
