POLICE have warned motorists they will issue tickets to cars bypassing a road closure barrier in Bournemouth town centre.

Traffic offence tickets were handed out to drivers passing through the road closure barriers in Old Christchurch Road last Friday and Saturday night.

The force has reminded people that by driving around the signs, three points on driving licences and a £100 fine will be dished out.

A spokesperson for Bournemouth Police said: “Please can we remind drivers not to drive around the road closed signs.

“They are put across the road during evening and nighttime of the weekends for the safety of those enjoying the nighttime economy in the town centre.

“Officers actively patrol Bournemouth town centre Friday and Saturday nights and will take positive action against those ignoring the signs.”

Last December, BCP Council said cameras could be installed to stop motorists breaking the overnight motor vehicle ban in Old Christchurch Road, specifically in the Horseshoe Common area.

BCP Council launched the consultation ahead of submitting an application to the transport secretary.

If approved, the local authority would be able to issue penalty charge notices for vehicles failing to comply with traffic regulation orders.

The traffic regulation order states that motor vehicles are prohibited from these roads between 10pm and 5am every night of the week. This is in place due to pedestrian footfall associated with the night-time economy.
