ROADWORKS on a busy roundabout are ongoing- and there is still no end in sight.

Emergency work to repair a “major gas leak” at Iford Roundabout is continuing to cause delays for motorists.

Four-way traffic lights remain in place on all approaches to the roundabout while SGN work to fix the gas network.

The utility company have been unable to confirm an end date for the works, which began earlier this month.

While temporary repairs have already been made to the gas network, specialist equipment is needed to achieve a permanent fix at the location.

SGN said this equipment has been delivered on site, but ‘due to leaks and the space available’ they’ve had to replan their work.

They are now liaising with specialist contractors to cut out and replace the affected pipes.

A spokesperson for SGN said: “Urgent work to repair a section of our gas network on Iford Roundabout is ongoing.

"During this time, temporary traffic lights remain in operation on all approaches to the Iford Roundabout. We recommend motorists allow additional time for their journeys if using this route.

“Our engineers have made several temporary repairs at the roundabout so far. Specialist equipment was delivered to site last week to help us carry out a bespoke, permanent repair at this location.

"However, due to the number of leaks and the space available, we’ve needed to replan this work and are liaising with specialist contractors to cut out and replace the affected pipes.

“We understand roadworks can be frustrating, but this work is essential to ensuring homes and businesses in Christchurch continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas.

"We’re hopeful of being able to provide estimated timescales for the completion of this repair once all plans are finalised with our contractors.”

Earlier in the month, SGN were also carrying out emergency works in Barrack Road in Christchurch for a gas leak.

This has now been completed, with each of the lanes on the eastbound and westbound carriageways now open.
