TRAINS are running again after a fault caused disruption for most of the day on Friday but are reportedly "very busy" this morning.

A fault with a third rail at Sway resulted in the line towards Bournemouth being blocked.

South Western Railway passengers were told there would be disruption until the end of the day.

Tickets dated for travel on December 2 will be valid for travel today.

South Western Railway spokesperson said on Friday: “We have been informed that there is a problem with the electric third rail in the Sway area.

"This means that the line towards Bournemouth is currently blocked. Network Rail engineers have identified the problem and are currently working to resolve the issue.”

Replacement bus services were running in both directions between Southampton and Bournemouth and Weymouth and Bournemouth.

Customers were also told to source taxis and claim the cost of it back through the customer service team.

Giving an update on social media this morning shortly after 7am, South Western Railway said: “The lines have now reopened following an earlier fault with the electric third rail at Sway.”

“At this time, we estimate that disruption to our services will end at 9am.”

Passengers have reported very busy trains this morning between Weymouth and London Waterloo following earlier cancellations.

Responding to a passenger, South Western Railway said trains are "very busy this morning after a number of services formed of less carriages than usual".

They added: "This is due to a number of trains affected by the incident at Sway yesterday having a massive impact on the network."
