CHELSEA have confirmed the appointment of Saints’ head of senior recruitment Joe Shields as the Blues’ new co-director of recruitment and talent.

Shields, who only arrived at St Mary’s this summer from Manchester City, had been told to stay away from Saints earlier this month when the news initially broke regarding Chelsea’s approach.

Chelsea’s statement mentions that Shields will link up with the Stamford Bridge outfit “when his obligations with Southampton are complete”.

At the time the approach was made public, reports suggested that Shields would have to serve a six-month notice period, whilst also commenting that Saints were open to compensation for early leave.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali told Chelsea’s website: “Joe is another great addition to Chelsea, and we’re thrilled to have him on board.
