FIREWORKS at Christchurch Carnival have been cancelled for this weekend after organisers felt the risks of causing a fire were “too great”.

Despite earlier communications stating that the fireworks at the carnival on Saturday evening (August 13) would go ahead, organisers have since reversed the decision in the wake of several fires seen in Dorset on Friday.

A Christchurch Carnival spokesperson said: “After much discussions with BCP [Council], the fire service and our fireworks operator, we have made a decision to cancel the fireworks for Saturday night.

“Although BCP have accepted the risk assessments from the operator, and the fire service have specifically not mentioned fireworks in their red alert and banned activities, we feel that the risks are too great, and therefore have cancelled.

“I am sorry it has taken so long to reach this decision, but we have had to consult quite a few people to confirm. You will all have to dance and sing even louder for ABBA on Saturday night, to make it a great finale. Thanks for your patience.”

Followers on social media, while disappointed, agreed the decision was for the best. “A shame, but understandable,” said one woman.

Christchurch Carnival has already had to cancel the dog show due to the extreme heat.

The popular event takes place and features stalls, live music, fireworks and a funfair.

It will be the first time a parade and full carnival programme has taken place for two years, after covid cancelled previous plans.
