DRUG driving, car defects and a driver speeding 65mph over the speed limit were just some of the incidents attended by traffic officers in Dorset this weekend.

Officers from the Dorset Police Traffic Unit dealt with a range of offences on Saturday, and Sunday across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole with arrests made and fines given.

Speeding was a common finding for traffic officers who had their hands full with a convoy of serious offending on the A35 Upton Bypass on Sunday, August 7.

One driver, who was clocked speeding at 92mph, justified the speed as necessary in order to “test drive” the car, according to police.

Also on the Upton Bypass was a driver stopped after being caught speeding at 94mph. According to police, this speed was “needed to drop a time limited parcel”.

Lastly, officers also reported the highest speed seen on their measuring device in more than one year when a driver was clocked at an astonishing 135mph – 65mph over the national speed limit.

Each driver was stopped within an hour of each other and reported.

Elsewhere in Poole, one vehicle was stopped for having no working brake lights. A prohibition notice and Traffic Offence Report (TOR) was issued.

Also in Poole, an LGV was found to be 1,360kgs (18.1 per cent) over its maximum gross weight limit and without a ministry plate fitted. Another prohibition notice and multiple TORs were issued.

In Bournemouth, meanwhile, a driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the specified limit for cannabis after a positive drug wipe. Enquiries are ongoing.
