THIS may not have been what Baden-Powell had in mind, but I Want You To Know That There Is Always Hope should stir the boys. And girls.

Teenage duo Todd Marriott and William Bowerman manage that White Stripes trick of making not very much sound like a great deal indeed. Armed with little more than some drums, guitars and synths they fashion a curious blend of angular indie gritpop and infuriatingly bold beats that suggest emotional forces are at work. Somehow they sound happy and fed up at the same time while pulling songs like Pink Squares that defy reason. Lucean lays its retro-rave synth heart to rest on a bed of spiky trumpets, while Hunter's Daughter sounds like it wants to be soundtracking a garage forecourt at 3am. Eternal.
