LITTER left on Bournemouth beach has been described as “disgusting”.

Thousands of people flocked to the beach yesterday to enjoy temperatures exceeding 30C, but what was left behind was a stretch of litter, tents, and overnight sleepers.

Pictures and video footage of the beach show scenes all too similar to those who live in the area, and beach cleaners who face the scene regularly during the summer.

One resident said: “It’s disgusting the rubbish on the beach left.

“Dog owners aren’t allowed to walk their dogs on there. I tried to speak to the council about the dogs being allowed on the beach before certain times got a standard response of how they appreciate the feedback. Littering carries £150 max, walking dog on the beach £1000 max. It’s outrageous.”

It comes despite a message issued by BCP Council in anticipation of the high temperatures.

They tweeted: “Our teams were out early today to clean up near Bournemouth's seafront. 20 bags of litter were manually picked from Bath Road North and South Car Parks.

"Our message is simple, if people find a bin full, find another one or take the litter home and leave only footprints.”

This morning they added: "It's been another incredibly busy morning for our clean up teams who have been out since the early hours cleaning up litter across the seafront.

"Seafront and beach visitors: Don't leave your litter. Put in a bin or take your litter home with you."

We have asked BCP Council the following questions:

  • Why aren’t people camping being moved on?
  • Do people camping at the beach, prevent early morning beach clean-up?
  • Is harsher enforcement an option to prevent this happening?
  • How many staff do you have dealing with beach enforcement issues?
