A WORKMAN has died after a crash involving a highways lorry carrying out resurfacing work. 

Dorset Police received a report of a collision in Redwood Drive in Ferndown on Tuesday morning, involving a lorry, which was carrying out resurfacing work, and a man, working for contractors Kiely Bros. 

The 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed.  

A road closure was put in place throughout the day to allow for an examination of the scene to be carried out.

A man aged in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of a driving offence where he remains in police custody. 

One resident described the incident as “devastating”, adding: “I was working from home but I didn’t see it. My heart goes out to the family.” 

Another resident added: “It’s a quiet road here. It’s very sad that this has happened.”  

A spokesman for Kiley Bros said: “It is with deepest regret that a member from one of our Kiely Highways surfacing team was involved in an incident on site on 5th July 2022, which unfortunately resulted in his death.

“The incident is now in the hands of the Health and Safety Executive and other associated agencies so, at this stage, we are unfortunately unable to comment any further. 

“We can confirm that senior representatives of the Kiely Highways business were immediately dispatched to the site and local area to offer the company’s assistance in every possible way.

“Kiely Bros are offering full support to all employees at this difficult time.

The Health and Safety Executive has been notified and is assisting with an investigation into the incident. 

An HSE spokesperson said: “HSE is aware of an incident and is working with Dorset Police who are leading the investigation.” 

A Dorset Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a Kiely Bros. contractor was tragically killed yesterday in an accident while carrying out road resurfacing for Dorset Council in Ferndown.  

“It would be inappropriate for us to comment further while Dorset Police and the Health and Safety Executive investigate the incident, but our thoughts and sympathies are with the gentleman’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Police are appealing for witnesses or anybody with information to come forward.  

Inspector Craig Tatton, of the traffic unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the man who sadly died at this extremely difficult time.  

“We are carrying out an investigation to establish the full circumstances of this incident and I would urge any witnesses who have not already spoken to police to please contact us.  

“I would also like to hear from anyone who may have captured anything of relevance on dashcam, home CCTV or doorbell camera footage.”
