A MAN who drove a motorbike while disqualified and crashed twice, before crashing an e-scooter into a Ford Focus and went “flying over the handlebars”, has been jailed.

Daniel John Hewitt, 46, of Jubilee Way, Sturminster Marshall, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance and dangerous driving in Corfe Mullen on January 11, 2022, as well as driving while disqualified in Poole on February 19, 2022.

The defendant, who had a history of being disqualified from driving having first been banned in 1993, appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court for sentencing on June 17.

Prosecuting, Brad Lawlor said on January 11 Hewitt was seen trying to kickstart a motorbike by a member of the public.

The member of the public stopped and asked if Hewitt was okay, who then asked them to follow him to Sturminster Marshall.

Hewitt was then seen driving on the A31 on the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing an oncoming vehicle.

The defendant then fell off, falling into a verge. He got back on the bike and drove off in the other direction.

The member of the public followed the defendant, and saw he had fallen off the bike again, he remained with Hewitt until police arrived.

Just over a month later, Hewitt rode an e-scooter while still disqualified from driving, “without regard for right of way”, Mr Lawlor said.

He collided with a Ford Focus after not giving way and went “flying over the handlebars”.

Mitigating, Richard Wayman said Hewitt relapsed and began offending again in 2020 after his twins were adopted.

He said the defendant was in supported accommodation which he would lose if he was sent to prison.

Judge Robert Pawson sentenced the defendant to 10 months imprisonment for the dangerous driving, four months for driving while disqualified and two months for driving without insurance, all to be served concurrently.

He was sentenced to four months for driving while disqualified on February 19, to be added to the ten months meaning he’ll serve a total of 14 months.

Judge Pawson said: “I have little faith you will abide by a community order. I cannot suspend the sentence, it must be immediate custody.”

Hewitt was also disqualified from driving for three years with an extension period of seven months.
