AN EXTRAORDINARY meeting of BCP Council will be held later this month after four councillors resigned from the Conservatives.

Poole members Steve Baron, Mohan Iyengar, Daniel Butt and Judes Butt made the decision to sit as Independents in late May.

These resignations meant the Conservative group, which has been running the local authority since September 2020, no longer has a majority.

A meeting to “review the political balance” will now take place at Bournemouth Town Hall on June 21.

A BCP Council spokesperson said: “In accordance with the constitution a requisition was received for an extraordinary council meeting which the chair of the council has agreed.

“The meeting will be held on June 21 at 7pm and the purpose of the meeting is to review the political balance of the council.”

As reported, the four councillors who left the Conservatives were all not selected as Tory candidates for local elections next year.

In a statement following their announcement to resign, BCP Council leader Cllr Drew Mellor said Poole Conservative Association had “effectively forced these local ambassadors to leave the Conservative group on BCP Council".
